SUMMARY:ASHRAE Society President Lecture - The Advanced Energy Design Guide for Hospitals
DESCRIPTION:Presented by ASHRAE Society President Mick Schwedler \nDownload Slides \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nThe Advanced Energy Design Guide for Hospitals – Reducing Energy Consumption by 50%\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince 2002\, ASHRAE\, the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES)\, USGBC\, and AIA\, with support from the Department of Energy\, have collaborated on a series of Advanced Energy Design Guides (AEDGs) that result in significant energy savings in the built environment beyond what is expected by using only ASHRAE Standard 90.1. The AEDG series of documents is now one of the most popular publications in ASHRAE’s history with over 600\,000 copies in circulation. \nThis program provides a brief history of the AEDG Series\, and then focuses on the 50% Large Hospital AEDG which will be covered in detail including examples of recommendations\, case studies\, technologies\, systems\, and controls to reduce energy use by 50% or more (compared to ASHRAE 90.1-2004).

SUMMARY:November 2020 Virtual Chapter Meeting - Transforming Existing Buildings Into High-Performing Facilities
DESCRIPTION:Most buildings\, new or old\, do not perform anywhere near their most efficient potential. HVAC systems deteriorate with time\, beginning from the first day they are put into operation. New design and installation concepts and new codes and standards are continually being introduced – at an ever-increasing pace. Energy audits and Retro-Commissioning or Re-Commissioning can help a facility manager figure out what needs to be done to improve the operating efficiency of the HVAC systems in a cost-effective manner – and to maintain that efficiency with proper Operating and Maintenance (O & M) techniques. \nThere are many methods of improving operation of older equipment\, as well as new methods of cleaning\, repairing and optimizing older equipment rather than replacing it. Energy efficiency as well as better indoor environmental quality (IEQ) are only two of many areas to be looked at to make a building more attractive to employees as well as to existing or potential tenants. \nWe will look at these and then discuss what needs to be done relative to using HVAC to make buildings safer for their inhabitants during – and after – a pandemic. \nClick here to register \nSpeaker Jim Newman\, PE\, CEM\, LEED AP BD+C\, ASHRAE OPMP & BEAP\nJim Newman is one of the USA’s most experienced energy efficiency and green building experts. Known as the “Dean of Green\,” Jim regularly speaks across the U.S. and internationally to professionals\, student groups and the media about sustainability and green technology. Today he uses his career expertise to help new and existing buildings improve indoor air quality and energy efficiency – even more critical since the COVID-19 pandemic started. \nJim is Owner/Managing Partner of Newman Consulting Group\, headquartered in Farmington Hills\, Michigan. He is a CEM\, a LEED AP BD+C\, an ASHRAE OPMP & BEAP\, a Fellow of the Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD)\, and will be inducted as a Fellow of ASHRAE in February of 2021. \nJim is a trainer for ASHRAE Energy Standard 90.1\, the basis for building codes in most states in the U.S.\, and has trained hundreds of architects\, engineers\, code officials and contractors on the use of the Standard. He was Co-Chair of the IAQ committee for the new chapter on Climate Control that will be published in the 2021 ASHRAE Fundamentals Handbook. He is also a trainer for the BOMA High-Performing Building Certification. \nJim received a BSME from Tufts University\, Boston\, MA\, and continued his education for an MBA degree at the University of Detroit and Wayne State University in Detroit\, MI. \nNewman Consulting Group (NCG) is an EPA Energy Star® and Rebuild Michigan® Partner. The Group works with architects\, engineers\, building owners and contractors throughout the world to design and construct more energy-efficient buildings to LEED® and other sustainable guidelines. NCG also helps commercial and industrial building owners retrofit existing buildings so they use less energy – and save money – while maintaining or improving the indoor air quality.

SUMMARY:YEA Willamette River Cleanup with SOLVE
DESCRIPTION:Come give back to this little known gem of a beach and hiking trail along the Willamette River. \nAll cleanup supplies will be provided\, just dress for the weather\, wear closed-toe shoes and bring a filled reusable water bottle. Please wear a mask and practice social distancing when checking in and receiving your supplies and instructions. \nWe will meet 1/4 mile south of the Sellwood Bridge on Hwy 43. Park on the wide shoulder\, on the river side of Hwy 43. Look for the SOLVE signs and registration table. \nLink to register:  https://www.solveoregon.org/opportunity/a0C1I00000RRWsCUAX \nLocation Map: https://goo.gl/maps/UokZzWoi1mn7VfkX7 \nSustainable tips: https://www.solveoregon.org/sustainability \n  \n  \nThe YEA kickoff to 2020-2021 program year was a success! Our members were able to take part in a beach cleanup event organized by SOLVE Oregon on Saturday\, September 27th. We teamed up with individuals and crews from various local organizations\, including the Portland Rugby Club\, to help make our community a cleaner and divert materials (such as plastics\, metal and motor oil) from entering the Willamette River. Plus\, we found this activity particularly relevant because it was outdoors and easily allowed for volunteers to maintain social distancing and wear face coverings. \n  \nThe inspiration for this event came from a brainstorming session held at last year’s YEA kickoff at Rouge Brewing – remember when we could meet at a brewery!?! Please let us know if you have any new ideas or want to get involved in a similar activity in the near future. Contact Mark Trader (YEA Chair) at mark.j.trader@swinerton.com or @oregon_ashrae on Instagram. \n

SUMMARY:July 2020 Virtual Chapter Meeting - Laboratory and Fume Exhaust Systems
DESCRIPTION:Understanding laboratory and fume exhaust system fundamentals allow engineering of solutions that will safely meet design requirements\, reduce the cost of operation\, and more effectively control the system pressure. This presentation reviews the fundamentals required to safely exhaust contaminated air from a critical environment with use of pre-engineered fume exhaust systems. We will review multiple plume rise equations\, how the exhaust system plays a role in the bigger lab control environment\, various configuration options of the systems\, and redundancy options. \nSpeaker: Robert is an Application Engineer with Greenheck’s Lab and Fume Exhaust Systems. Robert holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Robert has 10 years’ experience in the HVAC industry including work with consulting and equipment manufacturer. He commonly presents on a variety of HVAC subjects including fan fundamentals\, understanding fan sound\, and laboratory/hospital exhaust systems\, Matt is a member of NE Wisconsin ASHRAE and recently presented at the virtual ASHRAE summer conference. \nREGISTER FOR WEBINAR HERE: https://event.webinarjam.com/register/9/6kn2zto
