SUMMARY:April Technical Meeting - Applied Psychrometrics
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will include the following elements; (a) a review of the Psychrometric processes\, (b) defining state points of saturated air and how this creates the basis of the Psychrometric Chart\, (c) the application of mixed air streams\, (d) defining sensible heat ratio and applying this to the Psychrometric Chart\, and (e) illustrating real world examples of HVAC systems to the Psychrometric Chart. The examples illustrated will include a common heating and ventilation unit with humidification\, a 100% outside air unit used in process cooling applications where supply air temperature and absolute humidity are critical\, a common VAV air handling unit with mixed return/outside air which must supply cooled air to satisfy a specific space Sensible Heat Ratio\, and a more complex Dual Duct system where final supply air out of a diffuser can be calculated/illustrated through psychrometric processes (this example illustrates problem solving and integrates heat transfer equations of fluids). \nLearning Outcomes \n\nUnderstanding the fundamentals of the Psychrometric Chart\nApplying the Psychrometric Chart to Sensible and Latent Energy Change\nUsing real world air handling systems\, illustrate how Psychrometric Processes can be applied\n\nPresenter: \nDouglas F. Zentz\, Emeritus Professor from the HVACR Programs within the College of Engineering Technology at Ferris State University and past HVAC Program Coordinator. Doug received his Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Purdue University in 1980 and his Master degree in Career and Technical Education from Ferris State University in 2007. He is a past President of West Michigan ASHRAE\, a past RVC of Student Activities for Region V\, past Chair for Society Student Activities within ASHRAE\, past Regional Members Council Representative for Region V\, and past Director and Regional Chair for Region V of ASHRAE.  Doug teaches ASHRAE Level I and Level II Essentials face to face & online for ASHRAE. He was a DL (Distinguished Lecturer) for ASHRAE since 2012 and has presented at over 100 ASHRAE chapter visits around the world. Doug has also received the Distinguished Chapter Service Award and Distinguished Service Award from ASHRAE. \nIn the field of HVACR\, his background includes professional engineering sales for the Trane Company\, manager of engineering-design-build for W.J. O’Neil Company in Detroit\, vice-president of engineering for EPPA-Strand Custom Air Handling in Detroit\, and co-owner of a consulting firm in the Metro Detroit area. This experience started in 1980 and continued until his transformation into teaching at Ferris State University in 2003. \nIn the area of teaching\, he has taught junior and senior level HVAC Design (primary and secondary systems)\, Primary Equipment Selection\, Commercial Building Heat Gain/ Heat and the senior Capstone Experience. His teaching experience includes development of new curriculum (both in the traditional classroom and fully on-line) and teaching fully on-line courses for 20 years. He has mentored nine (9) different student groups which have received either a First\, Second\, or Third place recognition from ASHRAE in the Student Design Competition. He served on many educational committees and was a member of Fluke Instrument’s Advisory Board on IAQ. \nIn the area of professional speaking\, he has been the speaker at well over 100 events since 2005. DESCRIPTION:When: Monday March 11th from 11:30AM – 1:00PM \nWhere: Riverhouse on the Deschutes (Bend\, OR) \nA good design of a natural ventilation system maintains harmony between the local climates\, space sensible heat loads\, and the design of operable openings (windows). Poorly designed systems can perform miserably even in the best climatic conditions. Several factors such as building orientation\, building massing\, effective opening areas and their locations\, relative height differences\, internal heat loads\, furniture and seating arrangement within the occupied spaces can affect the performance of natural ventilation systems. This presentation will discuss basics of natural ventilation and with the help of case studies\, demonstrate how basic analyses can help predict the number of hot hours for occupants and how to optimize the performance of natural ventilation designs. \nGBCI Approved | 1 CE Hour \nAIA Approved | 1LU \nKishor Khankari\, Ph.D.\, Fellow ASHRAE\nDr. Kishor Khankari\, Ph.D. is President at AnSight LLC in Ann Arbor\, MI. He provides engineering solutions and insights through Physics based simulations and CFD analysis. Kishor has several years of experience in providing optimized HVAC solutions to a wide variety of applications involving external wind engineering\, plume dispersion\, smoke exhaust\, displacement ventilation\, natural ventilation\, radiant heating and cooling\, and indoor air quality and thermal comfort optimization for office spaces\, patient rooms\, operating rooms\, cleanrooms\, justice facilities\, data centers\, and warehouses. Dr. Khankari has developed a patented technology of a wind band design of exhaust fan assembly systems. He has developed several easy-to-use analytical software tools which are regularly used by design engineers in a variety companies including those in HVAC industry\, critical facilities\, and automotive industries. \nDr. Kishor Khankari is a Fellow member of ASHRAE. He is currently serving on ASHRAE Board as a Director-at Large. He is a recipient of Louise & Bill Holladay Distinguished Fellow Award\, ASHRAE Exceptional and Distinguished Service Awards. DESCRIPTION:Oregon continues to advance policies\, such as energy codes and building energy performance standards\, that will reduce energy use and emissions in our new and existing commercial buildings. This session will provide an overview of the Oregon Energy Efficiency Specialty Code\, which is currently based on ASHRAE 90.1-2019 but will soon be updated to reference ASHRAE 90.1-2022. While this next Oregon code update is still in development\, a high-level look at what’s new in ASHRAE 90.1-2022 will be discussed. DESCRIPTION:Understanding\, Resolving\, and/or Preventing Unhealthy Mold and Dampness Problems Inside Housing  \nDr. Tsongas is a consulting engineer and a Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at Portland State University. He is a building scientist with specialization in moisture\, mold\, indoor air quality (IAQ)\, and water intrusion problems in housing. He was invited to be one of five presenters for an ASHRAE-sponsored Satellite Broadcast/Webcast titled “Mold in our Building Environment.” \nOver 22\,000 people from North and South America viewed the three-hour satellite broadcast and webcast. He has inspected thousands of dwellings for mold and dampness problems and has over 40 years of experience. He regularly inspects low income housing with dampness and mold problems for Legal Aid Services of Oregon. He has four engineering degrees from Stanford University and is an ASHRAE Fellow. \nPresentation Description: An overview of mold\, dampness\, and excess moisture problems inside single and multifamily housing. Learn what dampness is\, what mold is\, where and why mold grows\, and what the true health impacts are. Learn how to inspect for mold growth conditions and identify common moisture sources. DESCRIPTION:In 2020\, ASHRAE’s Board of Directors approved a Diversity Commitment for the Society and established a Proactive Diversity Task Group with a goal to recommend detailed programs and initiatives seeking to eliminate all forms of discrimination and social injustice\, and proactively drive diversity through all levels within ASHRAE. This led some members to ask “why?” As a technical engineering society\, shouldn’t ASHRAE be focusing its efforts and the efforts of its volunteer members on industry-related research and education\, rather than furthering what some consider to be a political agenda? What role\, if any\, should ASHRAE play when it comes to diversity in the AEC community and social justice? Is there really a problem that needs to be solved? SUMMARY:June 2023 - Chapter Technical Meeting - Applications for Healthy Buildings
DESCRIPTION:Achieving balance among desired goals for indoor air quality (IAQ)\, energy consumption\, and occupant Comfort / Health within the built environment is challenging. ASHRAE endeavors to achieve this through guidelines and standards focused on advancing building science as it relates to environmental quality. This presentation will review the commonly used design guides found in ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.1\, “Ventilation and Acceptable Indoor Air Quality.”  \n The current form of ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2022 outlines mechanical ventilation procedures to provide acceptable IAQ in buildings: The Ventilation Rate Procedure and the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Procedure. While the Ventilation Rate Procedure provides only a dilution solution for the control of typical offending contaminants for a specified occupancy\, the IAQ Procedure provides a directed approach by reducing and controlling the concentrations of selected air contaminants of concern through both dilution and enhanced air cleaning.  \n Rather than relying only on diluting the concentration of contaminants with outdoor air\, designing with enhanced filtration of both recirculated and ventilation outdoor air can improve IAQ\, reduce airborne infectious disease and enhance cognitive functioning within the occupied space. This presentation will focus on the application of enhanced particle\, gas-phase and biological filtration for compliance with Standard 62.1 and recently published information on the Control of Infectious Aerosols – Standard 241P. An outline of the design aspects to consider will be reviewed\, with the focus on achieving acceptable levels of contaminants of concern within the occupied space while considering the desire to meet healthy building standards and improved cognitive functioning. \nPresented by Brian Monk \nRegister here

According to Omdia’s 2022 Data Center Thermal Management Market Analysis\, the liquid cooling market will top $3B by 2026\, with a 50% compound annual growth rate between now and then. Currently\, air-cooling effectively supports rack capacities up to 20kW. Newer generation CPUs and GPUs designed for high-performance compute and AI applications are pushing rack loads above 50kW. Liquid cooling leverages higher thermal transfer properties to support efficient and cost-effective cooling of these high-density racks. \nThere is a wide array of resources to help you understand the challenges\, opportunities\, and technical requirements that liquid cooling presents including white papers by the ASHARE TC9.9 Committee. SUMMARY:March 2023 Chapter Meeting - Future of Refrigerants
DESCRIPTION:The Future of Refrigerants \nNew societal environmental demands to control climate change are driving the development of new regulatory policies to restrict and lower the direct GWP (global warming potential) impact of F-gases. The HVAC&R industry is currently being challenged to invest significant resources to understand the best refrigerants that meet the above requirements. However\, there are many uncertainties and challenges given the ever-changing global regulatory environment\, within regions\, country\, state\, and sometimes locally by city. \nSafe non-flammable low toxicity F-gases allowed for an exponential increase in the standard of living of society through increased food productivity\, reduction in heat related deaths\, increased worker productivity and migration of people to cities and to hotter climates. The orderly transition from CFCs to HCFCs and HFCs achieved a balance between the societal environmental demands for reduced ozone depletion while continuing to improve the standard of living in developing countries and minimize the societal safety (nonflammable refrigerants) impacts for everyone. \nToday designers are being asked to consider new lower direct GWP unsaturated hydrofluorocarbons (HFOs) refrigerants\, some of which are slightly flammable under certain conditions\, as well as revisiting the application of natural refrigerants\, like carbon dioxide\, ammonia\, hydrocarbons\, and water. \nThis presentation will provide an update on new lower GWP alternatives introduced into the marketplace and it will highlight some important considerations\, particularly flammability\, that engineers\, designers\, and building owners should keep in mind regarding next-generation refrigerants.
