SUMMARY:July 2020 Virtual Chapter Meeting - Laboratory and Fume Exhaust Systems
DESCRIPTION:Understanding laboratory and fume exhaust system fundamentals allow engineering of solutions that will safely meet design requirements\, reduce the cost of operation\, and more effectively control the system pressure. This presentation reviews the fundamentals required to safely exhaust contaminated air from a critical environment with use of pre-engineered fume exhaust systems. We will review multiple plume rise equations\, how the exhaust system plays a role in the bigger lab control environment\, various configuration options of the systems\, and redundancy options. \nSpeaker: Robert is an Application Engineer with Greenheck’s Lab and Fume Exhaust Systems. Robert holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Robert has 10 years’ experience in the HVAC industry including work with consulting and equipment manufacturer. He commonly presents on a variety of HVAC subjects including fan fundamentals\, understanding fan sound\, and laboratory/hospital exhaust systems\, Matt is a member of NE Wisconsin ASHRAE and recently presented at the virtual ASHRAE summer conference. \nREGISTER FOR WEBINAR HERE: https://event.webinarjam.com/register/9/6kn2zto

SUMMARY:April 2017 Chapter Meeting: How ASHRAE's bEQ Label Drives High Performance and Energy Savings
DESCRIPTION:This presentation highlights the similarities and differences between bEQ\, Energy Star\, LEED®\, or other building certifications. Understanding them can help engineers and contractors better communicate with building owners and facility managers the value of EUI (Energy Utilization Index) standards that may soon be applied to their buildings\, as is now mandated by a number of municipalities\, counties and states in the U.S. (including Washington and Oregon). Companies that fully incorporate ASHRAE bEQ labeling can create a new profit center.

SUMMARY:February Chapter Meeting - The Interface Between Risk & Ethics with ASHRAE Society President Tim Wentz
DESCRIPTION:The topic of ethics has always been difficult to address because ethics itself is often seen as fluid; it depends on the person\, the culture or the situation\, thereby making it difficult to measure or predict.   This presentation looks at the relationship between risk and ethics while exploring some ways at placing risk and ethics into a common context where they can be viewed together and likely outcomes measured or predicted. \nJoin us for a special presentation by ASHRAE Society’s President\, Tim Wentz.  This is an excellent opportunity to meet our president\, find out about what is happening nationally and explore the timely and important subject of ethics in the industry.

SUMMARY:Willamette Valley Section January Meeting: Achieving a Sound Design Through Integrated Systems Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Please join the ASHRAE-Willamette Valley Section on January 12th\, 2017 for dinner and a presentation by Russell Hawkins of Vibro-Acoustics\, “Achieving a Sound Design Through Integrated Systems Solutions.” \nPresentation Synopsis\nWhen it comes to mechanical equipment noise\, only the correct application of vibration isolation and noise control products will produce a solution. That’s why picking a product from a catalog all too often leads to misapplication and results in severe problems or even disaster.  \nASHRAE states that there are three primary causes behind all HVAC noise problems: either noise control was not considered at the design stage\, it was the victim of “de-value engineering” post-design\, or system components were not integrated properly despite being considered. Vibration and noise sources and paths should be analyzed at project outset and vibration isolation and noise control solutions looked at together\, addressing both airborne and structural-borne noise. This is the only possible way to achieve the sound criterion in a space.

SUMMARY:November Chapter Meeting: The "State" of Oregon Energy Code
DESCRIPTION:Federal law requires that each state certify that their state energy code is at least equivalent to current federal model energy codes. Oregon took steps over a decade ago to improve energy codes as a means to help address state climate goals. This presentation looks at how energy codes are determined in Oregon and outlines opportunities for creating a logical energy code pathway to decrease future energy costs and achieve important climate goals. \nDate: November 10\, 2016 from 5:30-7:30 PM\nLocation: Multnomah Athletic Club\, Lownsdale Room\nCost: ASHRAE members $40\, Non-members $50\, Students FREE \nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:September 2016 Chapter Meeting: How "Reach Codes" are Shaping the Future of Energy Monitoring in Oregon
DESCRIPTION:Current code development only addresses the version being developed and does little to prepare the market for subsequent changes. Reach (a.k.a. stretch) codes are being implemented in order to align everyone working in the market – from design & construction professionals\, to manufacturers & distributors – in order to ensure higher compliance rates. We’ll take 30 minutes to discuss the implications. \nAbout the Speaker\nCole Knappen is a Strategic Segment Specialist for Schneider Electric. Prior to joining Schneider Electric\, Cole was VP of Sales & Marketing for Obvius\, a manufacturer of energy monitoring technologies. Cole has testified in favor of similar codes and supported research by Lawrence Berkeley National Labs in the fields of energy monitoring. \nMore information is found here.

SUMMARY:November 2015 Chapter Meeting: Technical Session & Dinner Meeting
DESCRIPTION:4:45 – 6:15 pm: Technical Session: Thinking Like an Engineer \nAfter 40 years lecturing to Mechanical Engineering students the presenter has evolved and reconsidered what his purpose should have been as an educator.  It goes beyond transfer of information and mastery of a necessary set of tools. It also goes further than applying those tools in the art of problem solving.  The presentation will highlight the nature of engineering thought processes\, recognizing the role in problem solving\, looking for alternatives\, using creativity\, thinking in a pragmatic manner\, considering safety\, and always asking questions. Societal problems exhibiting failure in thinking like engineers will be presented. These are to be examples and challenge for critical thinking on the part of engineering professionals while responsibly servicing society. \n6:15 – 8:30 pm: Dinner Meeting: Differing Perspectives in Global Warming \nA different approach to the usual formal presentation on these topics will be presented. It is the consequence of attempting to analyze the available data to demonstrate the reality of anthropogenic global warming. Unfortunately the analysis led to the conclusion that the only reality is in the uncertainties of these areas. A review of the data and predictions from climate change models will first provide evidence as to the culpability of CO2.  Following that\, through careful analysis of the data\, consideration of solar and astronomical large scale effects\, and the nature of computer modeling\, the second perspective will raise serious doubts on the culpability of CO2 as a greenhouse gas threatening the welfare or even survival of future generations. \nAbout the Presenter \nVictor Goldschmidt is an Emeritus Purdue Professor of Mechanical Engineering with more than 45 years of lecturing experience\, Fellow and Past Director-at-Large of ASHRAE\, and honorary member of the IIR (International Institute of Refrigeration)\, ACAIRE (Colombia Association of Air Conditioning and Refrigeration\, AAF (Argentine Association of Cold)\, and ASURVAC (Uruguay Association of Refrigeration\, Ventilation\, Air Conditioning and Heating). His industrial experience includes having been an Application Engineer\, and a Development Engineer with Honeywell\, as well as serving as team leader with numerous research contracts with the HVAC&R industry. He also led research teams through grants with the DOD\, NSF\, and other governmental bodies.   With more than 200 publications\, he served as mentor to both graduate and undergraduate students.  Currently he serves on ASHRAE’s Development Committee. Victor  is a facilitator to leadership training\, problem solving and strategic planning sessions\, a County Planning Commissioner and formerly a Trustee in the Leelanau Township Board in the Lower Northwest Michigan.
