DESCRIPTION:Presented by Phil Roach \nLegionella is a naturally grown bacteria that occurs in warm freshwater with the common sources being in cooling towers and potable water systems. The number of cases in the US of Legionnaires disease continues to rise year after year with about 10\,000 cases of Legionnaires disease being reported to the CDC in 2018. Most recently\, Portland experienced an outbreak where 5 people were hospitalized including 1 who died in 2021. \nIn this presentation\, we’ll cover legionella itself\, other water borne pathogens\, and how a person could contract legionella. DESCRIPTION:Very High Efficiency DOAS: \nA High-Performance HVAC Approach for Better IAQ\, Savings and Resilience\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe next step in the ongoing evolution of HVAC design\, very high efficiency DOAS uses the most efficient HVAC equipment and key design principles to provide cleaner and safer indoor air\, enhance indoor comfort\, and reduce commercial building HVAC energy use by an average of 65% (when compared to a code-minimum system). This presentation will introduce attendees to the key components of this all-electric system design\, outline the energy and non-energy benefits compared to less efficient systems\, and present findings and savings figures from a series of pilots conducted across a variety of Northwest commercial buildings.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Jordan Pratt\, PE\, CEM; Senior Engineer\, Energy 350\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJordan is passionate about energy efficiency and reducing the significant operating costs and environmental impact of our buildings today. DESCRIPTION:Presented by ASHRAE Society President Mick Schwedler \nDownload Slides \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nThe Advanced Energy Design Guide for Hospitals – Reducing Energy Consumption by 50%\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince 2002\, ASHRAE\, the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES)\, USGBC\, and AIA\, with support from the Department of Energy\, have collaborated on a series of Advanced Energy Design Guides (AEDGs) that result in significant energy savings in the built environment beyond what is expected by using only ASHRAE Standard 90.1. The AEDG series of documents is now one of the most popular publications in ASHRAE’s history with over 600\,000 copies in circulation. \nThis program provides a brief history of the AEDG Series\, and then focuses on the 50% Large Hospital AEDG which will be covered in detail including examples of recommendations\, case studies\, technologies\, systems\, and controls to reduce energy use by 50% or more (compared to ASHRAE 90.1-2004).

We teamed up with individuals and crews from various local organizations\, including the Portland Rugby Club\, to help make our community a cleaner and divert materials (such as plastics\, metal and motor oil) from entering the Willamette River. Plus\, we found this activity particularly relevant because it was outdoors and easily allowed for volunteers to maintain social distancing and wear face coverings. \n  \nThe inspiration for this event came from a brainstorming session held at last year’s YEA kickoff at Rouge Brewing – remember when we could meet at a brewery!?! DESCRIPTION:Understanding laboratory and fume exhaust system fundamentals allow engineering of solutions that will safely meet design requirements\, reduce the cost of operation\, and more effectively control the system pressure. This presentation reviews the fundamentals required to safely exhaust contaminated air from a critical environment with use of pre-engineered fume exhaust systems. We will review multiple plume rise equations\, how the exhaust system plays a role in the bigger lab control environment\, various configuration options of the systems\, and redundancy options. \nSpeaker: Robert is an Application Engineer with Greenheck’s Lab and Fume Exhaust Systems. Robert holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Robert has 10 years’ experience in the HVAC industry including work with consulting and equipment manufacturer. DESCRIPTION:Please join the ASHRAE-Willamette Valley Section on January 12th\, 2017 for dinner and a presentation by Russell Hawkins of Vibro-Acoustics\, “Achieving a Sound Design Through Integrated Systems Solutions.” \nPresentation Synopsis\nWhen it comes to mechanical equipment noise\, only the correct application of vibration isolation and noise control products will produce a solution. That’s why picking a product from a catalog all too often leads to misapplication and results in severe problems or even disaster.  \nASHRAE states that there are three primary causes behind all HVAC noise problems: either noise control was not considered at the design stage\, it was the victim of “de-value engineering” post-design\, or system components were not integrated properly despite being considered. Vibration and noise sources and paths should be analyzed at project outset and vibration isolation and noise control solutions looked at together\, addressing both airborne and structural-borne noise. This is the only possible way to achieve the sound criterion in a space.

Oregon took steps over a decade ago to improve energy codes as a means to help address state climate goals. Reach (a.k.a. stretch) codes are being implemented in order to align everyone working in the market – from design & construction professionals\, to manufacturers & distributors – in order to ensure higher compliance rates. We’ll take 30 minutes to discuss the implications. \nAbout the Speaker\nCole Knappen is a Strategic Segment Specialist for Schneider Electric. Prior to joining Schneider Electric\, Cole was VP of Sales & Marketing for Obvius\, a manufacturer of energy monitoring technologies.
